黃慎(西元一六八七-一七六八年尚在),福建寧化人。字躬懋,號癭瓢。山水學黃公望、倪瓚,亦善畫道釋人物,草書法懷素。畫能創水墨新趣,為「揚州八怪」之一。黃慎作畫,向能自出新意。是冊共計六幅,分別繪碧桃、牡丹、芍藥、玉簪、水仙、梅花。以快速運筆,草寫花卉各種姿態,筆法雖縱恣然不失靈秀,並將水墨寫意之趣發揮至極致。
本冊為林宗毅先生捐贈。

黃慎(一六八七-一七六八之後),福建寧化人。字恭懋,號癭瓢。家貧無以為繼,遂學畫,康熙五十八(一七一九)年鬻畫於揚州,開創筆墨新趣,為揚州畫派重要畫家。本冊共計六幅,分別描繪碧桃、牡丹、芍藥、玉簪、水仙及梅花。用狂草筆法狀寫各種花卉,筆姿放縱,得荒率之趣而不失靈秀之氣。以草書所題之款識與畫互為映發,並臻佳妙。
本冊為林宗毅先生捐贈。

| Description |
Huang Shen (style name Kung-mao, sobriquet Ying-p’iao) was a native of Ning-hua, Fukien. From a poor family without means of making a living, he gradually learned painting. In 1719, he sold his paintings in Yangchow and developed an innovative style, becoming one of the most important figures in the Yangchow school of painting.
This album donated by Mr. Lin Tsung-i consists of 6 leaves, one for peach blossoms, tree peonies, peonies, hairpin lilies, narcissi, and plum blossoms. Huang used wild cursive script methods to shape and render each kind of flower, the brushwork unbridled and straightforward without becoming chaotic or vulgar. The inscription in cursive script complements the painting for a perfect match.

| Description |
Huang Shen, a native of Fukien province, painted landscapes as well as Buddhist and Taoist figures and also excelled at cursive script calligraphy. He eventually became famous in painting. He created an innovative style and was known as one of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangchow.”
This album of six leaves includes paintings of peach, peony, chrysanthemum, tuberose, narcissus, and plum blossoms. His innovative and personal style parts from nature to reveal his quick brushwork in the cursive forms appearing in various poses. Though unrestrained, his style is still elegant. Huang Shen took the “sketching ideas” style to the peak of abstraction. This work was donated to the Museum by Mr. Lin Tsung-hsien.
