王詵(公元一0三六-?),字晉卿,太原人。尚英宗女,魏國大長公主,為利州防御使。工書畫,山水學李成、郭熙,寫煙江遠壑、柳溪漁浦、晴嵐絕澗、寒林幽谷,莫不清潤可愛,超軼近古。本幅繪碧樹重蔭間,屏榻錯落,一宮妝仕女對鏡婷立,另有兩名侍婢捧奩將至。人物、配景鉤描極細,賦色於繁複中未失雅淡。對幅題詩有云:「不遣丹青彩筆慵,自然風韻寫豐容,鏡匳月幌清如水,寂寂閒庭花影重。」蓋詵以尚主之貴,日在綺羅宮苑之間,體味既深,筆底乃能至此。

設色畫。仕女臨鏡曉?,女侍二人執侍,無名款。圖為故宮「宋元名繪」集冊中之一幀,著錄見石渠寶笈三編四OO二頁,故宮書畫錄卷六﹒二O九頁。

| Description |
A woman admires her make-up in a mirror; she is attended by two women holding a tray of cosmetics. The painting is not signed. It is a leaf in the album Sung-Yuan ming-hui.

| Description |
In this scene of the women's quarters, screens and low couches crisscross layered shadows of emerald green foliage. Here a lady of the court stands gracefully before a mirror, attended by two maids who are bringing her a dressing case. Both the figures and the background scenery are depicted with great care, and the painting, although brightly colored, never loses a sense of delicacy. The artist's wife was an imperial princess, and so Wang was well acquainted with the resplendent lifestyle of the court, of which he has given us a glimpse in this painting. The accompanying poem reads
Eschewing hue and color, my pigment brushes lie idle
For using only the rhythms of Nature itself do I limn her lovely form.
In the mirrored vanity the "moon" shines clear as water
Where blossoms and shadows layer the courtyard still and quiet.
Wang Shen (whose style-name was Chin-ch'ing) was a native of T'ai-yuan, Shansi. He was the consort of the Grand Princess of Wei, who was the daughter of the Sung emperor Ying-tsung (r. 1064-1066). Wang served as a governing official in Li-chou, Shensi. A noted painter and calligrapher, he modeled his landscape paintings on those of Li Ch'eng (919-967) and Kuo Hsi (ca. 1000-ca. 1090).
