朱羲，北宋江南人，生卒年不詳，與族屬朱瑩同以畫牛得名，此圖左下方題：「江南朱羲摹五代戴嵩筆」。戴嵩為畫牛名家，其畫常窮牛野性筋骨之妙，栩栩如生。
此圖亦一壯牛，體積龐然，回首擺尾，慢步於芳草之間，意態清閒自在。此牛眼睛凝紅，肌肉結構解體明晰，頗得戴嵩畫牛之精神，其用筆時或粗放，時或精細，變化多端，倍增畫趣。而點景草木疏零，益顯此牛生意盎然。

| Description |
Chu Hsi was a painter of Chiang-nan during the Northern Sung period. Related to Chu Ying, he was also known for his paintings of oxen. There is a signature in the lower left corner of this painting: "Chu Hsi of Chiang-nan, followering the style of Tai Sung of the Five Dynasties. Tai Sung was a well-known earlier painter of oxen, said to have exhausted every detail of the animal's form and character in a manner true to life.
The painting depicts a single ox, huge in size, turning his head and swinging his tail as he slowly moves forward in the wild grass. His manner seems pure and at ease. His eyes are red and his body's structure is clearly described. The painter seems to have captured the spirit of Tai Sung's oxen. The use of the brush varies from a rough and loose manner to a fine and detailed one, adding the painting with intrinsic visual interest.
