黃鉞（西元一七五○－一八四一年），安徽當塗人。字左田，號左君。乾隆五十五年（一七九○）進士，官至戶部尚書。工詩文，善山水、花卉，作品頗受乾隆讚賞。
據宋「東京夢華錄」，立春前一日，開封府進春牛入禁中鞭春。春牛即土製的牛，古人於農曆十二月出土牛以送寒氣。後於立春造土牛，以勸農耕，象徵春耕之始。本幅即描繪是日，官府依民俗，以彩旗、笙歌出迎土牛，百姓簇擁，停車駐看之景。

Welcoming the Spring
Huang Yueh (1750-1841)
Ch’ing Dynasty
Huang Yueh (style name Tso-t’ien and sobriquet Tso-chun) was a native of Tang-t’u, Anhwei province. In 1790, he received the chin-shih civil service degree and went on to serve as the Minister of Revenue. Gifted at poetry and prose, he also excelled at painting landscapes, which were appreciated by the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795).
According to Dream of the Eastern Capital (Tung-ching meng-hua lu) of the Sung dynasty (960-1279), on the last day of the lunar year, it was the custom to take the “ox of spring” into the imperial compound and welcome the new year. This ox was made of clay and was used to lead away the winter cold during the last month of the lunar year, and, on the first day of spring, to symbolize the start of tilling the fields. This painting describes this custom, as people line the streets with festive decorations as they welcome the clay ox. Common folk can be seen bustling about, having stopped to look at the clay ox.
