| 內容簡介 |
蔣廷錫（西元一六六九至一七三二年），字揚孫，一字酉君，號西谷，一號南沙，又號青桐居士，江蘇常熟人。康熙四十年（一七○三）進士，官至大學士。工書善畫，以逸筆寫生，風神生動，意度堂皇。間作水墨折枝窠石，以及蘭竹小品，極有韻致。
柳樹上，螳螂捕蟬。螳螂雖為小物，畫時宜威嚴，本幅畫其攫蟬，勢欲吞噬，頗得殺伐之狀。
本幅選自「寫生花鳥冊」第六開，自題臨元人捕蟬圖。

| Description |
Chiang T’ing-hsi was a native of Ch’ang-shu, Kiangsu province. His style names were Yang-sun and Yu-chun; his sobriquets were Hsi-ku and Nan-sha. He also called himself Ch’ing-t’ung chu-shih. He received his degree in 1730 and served as academician at the court. A skilled calligrapher and painter, Chiang painted flowers from life with an untrammeled brush that instilled spirit and life in his subjects. Tree branches and rocks painted in monochrome ink were also in his repertory, as well as small, elegant renderings of orchids and bamboos.
Though a small insect, a mantis could be combative and formidable. In this painting, a mantis captures a cicada on a willow tree. Chiang T’ing-hsi succeeded in depicting the power of a mantis which is about to devour a cicada. The painting has a title by the artist, “Mantis Captures a Cicada, after a Yuan Artist.” It is the sixth leaf from the album, Paintings of Flowers and Birds from Life.
