Kotenmyō was a place, located in present day Sano City in Tochigi Prefecture. This iron tea kettle was cast molded. The surface is divided with a horizontal line just below the mid point, the area above this line decorated with a nipple pattern called the arare, meaning "hail stone", pattern in Japanese. The iron tea kettle derived from the chafu mentioned in the "Classic of Tea" (chajing) by Chinese Tang writer Lu Yu, and was to be used to boil the water for preparing the tea.
