Deep, straight-sided bowl with irregular rim and short ring foot. Despite the thick walls the bowl is light to hold. The base is stamped. Made out of red clay, it was covered in a transparent glaze and fired at a low temperature. White glaze was applied unevenly, and the red of the clay body can be clearly discerned below it. Sany? (1685-1739) was the sixth generation of the raku family lineage of potters, and was regarded as the most adept among the raku potters at emulating the work of Honami K?etsu, the present piece being an excellent example of that.
