Tea bowl with silver rim. Heavily potted in coarse clay and thinly glazed, the glaze on the outside does not extend all the way to the ring foot, exposing the blackish brown color clay body at the ring foot. The glaze itself is a yellowish brown the Japanese called kitenmoku. According to archeological reports, similar tea bowl examples have been unearthed from the Nanping Chayang kiln in China''s Fuzhou province. Brown-glazed bowls of this type were not initially highly regarded, but after the Momoyama period and Sen no Riky?''s espousal of the tradition of wabicha, they came to more adequately reflect contemporary taste, as they fit in with the esthetic ideals of that tradition.
