重陽節是農曆的九月九日，《易經》將九定為陽數，日月逢九，兩陽相重，故名「重陽」。重陽的各種習俗如登高、佩茱萸、賞菊飲酒始於漢代，原先是避禍禳災的迷信成分，隨著歲月的流逝，迷信觀念漸淡，到唐宋已成文人雅士飲酒、賞菊、登高、賦詩的節日。圖中所描繪的正是菊花會的情景，船，運送著盆栽，人，從容地賞玩。野外則遊人提著酒食，登高抒懷，極目遠眺，各種綺麗風光盡收眼底。

| 內容簡介 |
由於陶淵明的愛菊，菊花便成了士人們特殊的愛賞物。九月，正是菊花盛開的時候，而種菊也各有特殊的技巧。因此各人把自己的菊花，湊集在一處，來觀摩讚賞，形成菊花會。圖中所描繪的，正是菊花會的情景。船，運送著盆栽，人，從容地賞玩。而野外則遊人提攜著酒食，是重九登高的另一幕景色。本幅無名款，出自清代乾隆時期宮廷畫家集體創作。所畫出於清高宗（圓明園四十景詩）中之「彙芳書院」，詩句前說明：「可攀捫而上問津石室」。石室可見於畫中上方。

Chrysanthemum became widely admired among the men of letters ever since the nature-poet T’ao Y uan-ming (365-427) expressed his love for the flower. As it comes into full bloom in the ninth month of the lunar calendar, the main activity of the month is to hold meetings for showing and appreciating chrysanthemums. Throughout the centuries, many different methods and techniques for cultivating the flower have developed, and chrysanthemum lovers would bring their objects to the flower show for mutual admiration and enjoyment.
This painting depicts the scene of such a chrysanthemum show. Choice specimens in pots are well arranged in the garden, and some are being brought in by boat. Both men and women are engaged in leisurely enjoyment of the show. Far away in the field people are seen out picnicking with food and wine; another major activity of the month is mountain climbing.

Ch’ing Dynasty (1644-1911)
Double Ninth Day refers to the 9th day of the 9th lunar month. The number 9 is particularly “yang” (as in yin-yang); the “yang” 3 is multiplied 3 times (3x3, hence the name Double Yang Day). One of the events associated with this day is ascending the heights, wearing dogwood, appreciating chrysanthemums, and drinking wine, which began in the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) as a superstition to avoid bad luck. The superstition faded and by the T’ang and Sung it became a time for scholars to gather, drink, view chrysanthemums, ascend heights, and compose poetry. The foreground here is filled with chrysanthemums as scholars gather and bring them for viewing. Up in the hills, scholars meet with wine and food to view the scenery.
