朱先是江蘇武進人，生年不詳，卒年約八十三歲。擅於畫草蟲，但並不刻意追求工整，經常以蘆草，或者麥桿來代替毛筆，而能將花卉昆蟲描繪得栩栩生動。
本幅是他七十三歲的作品。畫中，牽牛花圍繞著蘆葦，綻放出美麗的藍色花朵，四周並有螽斯、螳螂、蝴蝶和小雨蛙穿梭嬉戲。取材與布局，雖然只是野外常見的景象，然而透過率意的筆調，與雅淡的色彩，卻能讓人領略無比清新的暢快感受。

朱先，字允先，號雪林，武進人，善畫草蟲，?以蘆梢麥桿代筆，無意求工，而栩栩生動。性淡雅，喜著書，卒年八十三。
牽牛花繞著蘆草，螽斯、蝴蝶前來嬉戲，情境正如題詩「小景亦離奇」。畫家以簡率的筆調，雅淡的色彩，畫江邊小景。頗有平淡之趣。

Ch’ing dynasty (1644-1911)
Chu Hsien was a native of Wu-chin in Kiangsu province. His style name was Yuan-hsien and his sobriquet was Hsueh-lih. He used reed stuck into a wheat-stalk holder as his painting brush. When he painted he did not care for details, yet the effect was very lifelike. He was a man with plain and refine taste and devoted himself to writing. He died at the age of eighty-two.
The morning glory vines twine around reeds along a river bank. Two butterflies and other insects seem to love this little corner. In simple yet bold brushwork, Chu Hsien depicts this little riverside scene with light and elegant coloration. It is indeed an ordinary spot, yet how strangely exquisite it could be!

Little is known about Chu Hsien, except that he was a native of Kiangsu province and that he died at the age of 82. He excelled at plants and insects, but did not use precise brushwork. He often used a reed or a stalk of wheat as his brush. Nonetheless, his flowers, plants, and insects were quite lifelike.
This work was done at the age of 72. Shown here is a morning glory plant at the base of some reeds as it bursts forth with beautiful blue blossoms. Katydids, a mantis, and two butterflies frolic among the plants as a small frog sits on the ground below. Despite this simple arrangement and the common subjects, the artist's use of sketchy brushwork and elegant coloring suggest the carefree innocence and delight of an intimate rustic setting.
