徐燦,一作徐粲,女,字湘蘋,一字深明,號紫䇾,生死時年不詳,江蘇吳縣人,善作詩文,擅長書法和繪畫,畫攻仕女,筆法古秀,衣紋運筆如蓴帶,著色淡雅,頗得北宋人遺意。晚年則專寫水墨觀音。傳說她的丈夫陳之遴,浙江海寧人,因事故死於關外,於是,她畫觀音千幅進呈皇帝,乞恩賜屍骨歸葬,由是名播海內外。

Ch’ing dynasty
Hsu Ts’an (tzu, Chiang-p’in and Shen-ming) was a woman from Wu-hsien, Kiangsu. Her birth and death dates are unknown. She was proficient in composing poetry and prose, and was a skilled calligrapher and painter. Specializing in the painting of beautiful women, her brush manner was archaic and refined. In depicting clothing she used lines which have been described as resembling the trailing roots of a water plant.
Her application of colors was light and elegant and to a degree she inherited the ideas of the masters of the Northern Sung. In her late years she specialized in ink paintings of Kuan-yin. According to tradition, her husband, Ch’en Chih-lin, a native of Chekiang Province, because of certain affairs died beyond the frontier. There upon she painted a thousand Kuan-yin scrolls and presented them to the emperor, entreating him to return her husband remains to his home for burial. Because of this her fame spread far and wide.
