Description Album of Sketches Shen Chou (1427-1509) Ming dynasty Shen Chou, whose style name was Ch’i-nan and sobriquets Shih-t’ien and Pai-shih weng, was a native of Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. He was good at poetry and prose as well as calligraphy, in addition to excelling in painting. He was skilled at all kinds of subjects: landscape, fruits and vegetables, birds, fish, animals, and figures. His forms contained a quality of tender naiveté. He wielded the brush with force and bluntness, using rich, thick ink. His works convey a feeling of substance and vigor as well as an abundant antique mood. He is recognized as the primary member of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. This album contains renditions of landscapes, figures, pomegranate, ringdove, loquat, cabbage, hibiscus, tangerine, cockcomb, and so forth. These are mostly in ink monochrome, though some are lightly colored. Every leaf contains a poem by the artist on the facing page. The album is undated. Shen Chou painted another album of sketches when he was 67 years old; the refined brushwork compares closely with the album.
Description Sketches from Life Shen Chou (1427-1509) Ming Dynasty Shen Chou (style name Ch’i-nan; sobriquets Shih-t’ien and Pai-shih-weng) was a native of Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. A man of broad and profound character, he was skilled at poetry and calligraphy, and especially gifted at painting. In his works, the forms have a quality of elegant naivete. He wielded the brush with force and bluntness, using rich and thick ink. His works convey a quality of forceful plainness as well as an abundantly archaic flavor. Shen Chou became known as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming. In the present album, the leaves are folded horizontally and the upper portion mounted with poems inscribed by Shen Chou and the lower galf with the paintings. There are various subjects portrayed in these paintings done in monochrome ink as well as color, including landscapes, figures, flowers, fruits, and birds. Compared to the strong brushwork of his later years, however, the style of this album appears relatively weak.
