Description
After a Poem Wen Tien (1633-1704) Ch’ing Dynasty (1644-1911) This scene depicts the line from T’ao Yuan-ming’s poem Returning Home that reads “Lingering to caress a solitary pine.” T’ao sits listening and watching as if he were at one with his natural surroundings. Extant paintings by Wen Tien reveal his aptitude for painting pines and demonstrate his fondness for using small ink dotting of “moss,” and here the trunk and branches of the tree are covered with this fine patterning. After a poem, although less than a square foot in size, stands out for its especially beautiful inkwork. Wen Tien, a native of Ch’ang-chou (present-day Soochow, Kiangsu), was a descendant of the famous artist Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). An accomplished poet and writer, he also excelled at painting and calligraphy. Wen’s landscapes were executed in the fine brushwork characteristic of his family’s style, and he created figure paintings and small scenes of pines and bamboo rendered in carefully wrought ink. Wen was furthermore known as a man of fine character who did not seek public recognition but merely sought to amuse himself and earn a small living with his skills as a painter and calligrapher.

Description
Wen Tien, a native of Soochow, was a descendant of Wen Cheng-ming. Excelling at calligraphy and painting, his landscapes followed the family style, and he painted figures and especially small scenes of pines and bamboo. This is the 1st leaf of Wen Tien’s album poetic Illustrations and represents a line from T’ao Yuan-ming’s Homecoming; “Lingering to caress a solitary pine.” T’ao appears here listening and viewing as if at one with his natural surroundings. Extant works by Wen Tien reveal his preference for painting pines and using “moss” dots. Despite the size of this work, pine branches are rendered with intricate detail. The delicate brushwork makes this small, elegant work stand out even more.
