孫克弘（一五三二－一六一○）字允執，號雪居，松江人。少時以父廕授應天府治中，擢漢陽太守。後無意仕進，於東郊故居修築精舍，輦奇石，置庭除，環列鼎彝金石法書名畫，摩挲其中。好游戲於寫生花卉，下筆輒得其妙，晚好寫梅竹，偶作朱竹。山水偶臨米氏雲山，馬遠畫水。
此圖為林下清課二十幅之一，畫松塢茅亭，僧俗坐對，二童子篝燈攜物自小徑而來。坡石皴紋若覆草狀，畫松樹筆墨生拙而有逸趣。

The Illumination in the Thatched Hut
Sun K’o-hung (1532-1610)

The Chinese title of this scene is a play on words that refers to both lamplight and spiritual illumination, which is perhaps the topic of conversation of the Buddhist monk and the layman who sit facing one another in this thatched hut encircled by pine trees. Two servants carrying lanterns are approaching along a narrow path. The rocks and terrain have been drawn in grasslike, fibrous texture strokes and contour lines; the pines have been modeled to look archaic and primeval.
Sun K’o-hung, a native of Sungkiang, served for a time as an official but lost interest in politics and returned home, where he occupied himself with his collection of paintings and antiquities. He excelled at painting flowers and plants from life; he also painted plum blossoms and bamboo, the latter sometimes in vermilion ink. His landscapes were influenced by the Sung painters Mi Fu and Ma Yuan.
