Description The great-granddaughter of Wen Zhengming, Wen Shu (style name Duanrong), native to Changzhou (modern Suzhou), married the lofty Suzhou scholar Zhao Lingyun. Gifted since childhood, she made sketches from life of various plants and insects. Said to number a thousand, they formed the album, “Grasses, Trees, and Insects from Wintry Mountain.” This work depicts an intimately appealing scene of a mulberry branch with leaves and fruit as 3 silkworms slowly make their way. The leaves show evidence of their meal, hence the title. The entire work is done with careful outlines, the forms clear and orderly. Despite its small size, the green leaves, red fruit, and white silkworms done in refined brushwork and colors reveal her pure grace. (20120714)
Description Wen Shu, whose style name was Tuan-jung, was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu. The daughter of Wen Ts’ung-chien (great grandson of Wen Cheng-ming), she married the scholar Chao Ling-chun (1591-1640) of Wu-chung. Clever and talented, Wen Shu was a gifted painter who could sketch anything she saw. She died at forty sui of age. She specialized in painting flowers, and it is said that whenever in her ordinary day life, she saw an unusual flower or stem of grass, a small insect or rare butterfly, she would make an offhand sketch of them. Altogether there were said to be over a thousand specimens collected into an album, which was given the title “Grasses, Trees, and Insects from the Wintry Mountain.” This painting is an example of her skill at capturing the nature of her subjects. Three silkworms, which are wriggling on the mulberry leaves, are described with grace and charm.
Description Wen Shu, a native of Soochow, was the great-granddaughter of the famous Soochow artist Wen Cheng-ming. Gifted since childhood in paining, she made sketches from life upon coming across interesting plant-and-insect subjects, which are said to have totaled more than a thousand. This work depicts the branch of a mulberry tree with its fruit and luxuriant leaves. Three silkworms are shown; one inches its way up the branch while two are munching on a leaf below. The holes in the leaves clearly show the remains of their meal, hence the title of this work. The delicate colors of the white worms, green leaves, and red fruit have all been cleverly arranged, imparting even further elegance to the graceful brushwork and forms.
