| Description |
Ting Yen-yung, a native of Maoming in Guangdong, in his early years studied Western oil painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in Japan, and following his return to China taught at several art schools. He went to Hong Kong in 1949 and served as a teacher there until his death.
During and after the War, Ting experimented with new Chinese painting techniques. Although his style was influenced by the early Qing painter Bada shanren, he also used many lines and bright colors in a unique style of his own. This work depicts a tulip-and-frog arrangement that departs from tradition. The stem areas have a calligraphic rhythm and the frogs are done in succinct brushwork, standing out on the blossoms for a fresh and novel visual effect. The fusion of ink and colors throughout the work is gorgeous.
This work was purchased by the National Palace Museum in 1986.
