Description Wen Zhengming, a native of Changzhou (modern Suzhou, Kiangsu), was a descendant of Wen Xingong. Originally named Bi and style name Zhengming, he later went by his style name and took another one, Zhengzhong, along with the sobriquets Tingyunsheng and Hengshan. In painting, he followed Shen Zhou, coming to excel at this art form and calligraphy and being recognized as one of the Four Ming Masters. Wen Zhengming lived to be nearly 90 and still in good health in his advanced years, diligently doing painting and calligraphy. This accounts for the large number of his surviving works. This painting, donated to the National Palace Museum by Mr. Huang Chun-pi, depicts a banana plant and a stone in a pot. Many inscriptions of poetry appear on the work, and from them we learn the origin of the subject matter here. The green banana leaves, white rock, and archaic pot contrast in an interesting manner for an appealing effect. The inscription is dated to the equivalent of 1532, when Wen was 63 by Chinese reckoning.
