梅蘭芳（1894－1961），名瀾，學名鶴鳴，字畹華，藝名蘭芳，乃著名京劇演員。青年時期赴滬演出，即與吳昌碩相會，結為忘年之交，開啟習畫之路。返京後，從王蘿白習畫，後拜齊白石、陳半丁、姚茫父為師，並與齊白石交誼深厚，致力畫藝。 此幅畫春梅吐蕊，枝頭綻放，寫意的筆觸中別具雅緻風味。畫於1936年。黃莉容、黃文如姊妹捐贈。

| Description |
Mei Lan-fang (name Lan, school name Ho-ming, style name Wan-hua, and stage name Lan-fang) was a famous Peking Opera actor. In his youth, he went to Shanghai, where had met the famed artist Wu Ch'ang-shih, forming a friendship despite their age difference and beginning his path in painting. Back in Peking, he studied with Wang Lo-pai, later learning from Ch'i Pai-shih, Ch'en Pan-ting, and Yao Mang-fu. His friendship with Ch’i was especially close as he worked diligently at painting. This work depicts a budding plum tree in spring, the blossoms on the branches bursting forth. The “sketching ideas” touch of the brush is particularly elegant. Done in 1936, this work was donated to the Museum by the sisters Huang Li-jung and Huang Wen-ju.
