徐悲鴻(西元一八九五-一九五三年),江蘇宜興人。民國八年至十六年間,曾赴法、德等國留學,研習古典寫實主義的油畫技法。返國後,歷任中央大學、北平藝專教職,並楬櫫中國畫改良論,力主中西畫風的融合,於民初畫壇及美術教育之影響,至深且遠。
本幅為蔡辰男先生捐贈,作於民國三十六年,時五十三歲。徐氏畫馬,盡掃傳統以線勾勒的工細筆調,自創一大寫意格局,墨色對比極強,充滿勁健的美感。然細審馬匹結構,則仍造型精準,顯現其素描寫實的深厚根柢。

Hsu Pei-hung (1895-1953)

Hsu Pei-hung was a native of I-hsing, Kiangsu, who studied in Europe from 1919 to 1927, learning the oil techniques of classical realism expounded in traditional art academies. After returning to China, he went on to teach at the Central University and Peking Art College. He was one of the leading advocates for reform in Chinese painting and sought the harmonious combination of Chinese and Western styles. He came to have a profound impact on art education and the art scene of early Republican China.
This painting was done in 1947, when Hsu was 52-years-old. When Hsu painted horses, he combined elements of traditional Chinese brushwork with Western realism, creating a style of his own much in the manner of “sketching-from-ideas.” With extreme contrasts of light and dark, this work is full of a powerful yet refined aesthetic beauty. The finely detailed composition of the horse has an elegant and exact form. This work obviously reveals the deep roots of Hsu’s training in realistic Western-style sketching.
This hanging scroll was donated to the Museum by Mr. Ts’ai Ch’en-nan.
