黃慎（西元一六八七－一七六八－？），字躬懋、恭壽，號癭瓢，福建寧化人。家貧無以為生，遂學畫，方十八九歲，寄身蕭寺，晝為畫，夜無得燭，從佛堂光明燈下讀書，其藝既擅，出遊豫章，歷吳、越，康熙五十八年（一七一九）至揚州鬻畫。為「揚州八怪之一」。
畫李鐵拐拈花獨賞。癭瓢作人物，運筆落墨猶如寫草書，與款字相得益彰。本幅為黃君璧先生捐贈。

Portrait of the Immortal Li T’ieh-kuai
Huang Shen (1687-ca. 1768)
Ch’ing Dynasty
Huang Shen came from a poor family with no means of support, so he began to study painting at the age of 18. Living in a desolate temple, he painted by daylight and read at night by the candles in the temple. His art eventually became renowned, and he traveled through southern China, finally settling in Yangchow in 1719. He is known as one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangchow.
This painting is a portrayal of the immortal Li T’ieh-kuai appreciating a flower. Huang’s figure painting reveals brushwork that resembles cursive script calligraphy. In fact, the style of the painting perfectly matches the calligraphy of the artist’s inscription. This painting was donated to the Museum by Mr. Huang Chun-pi.
