任頤(西元一八四0-一八九五年),浙江山陰人。字小樓,後改字伯年。父鶴聲,長於寫真,頤幼年曾得其指授,後又從任熊、任薰習,畫風取法陳洪綬、華喦、二任而成一家之體。人物、花鳥俱佳,賦色鮮麗,形象活潑;并以長期鬻畫上海,為時人目為海上派班頭。本幅畫村居日常生活之景,一老叟攜小童佇立肉攤前,正等待購買攤主所秤之蹄肉。另一壯漢立於旁,似正與攤主閒談。案上置豬頭及大塊豬肉,小童的目光被牢牢地吸引住。通幅以淡赭為主調,樹籬人物,草草勾畫,頗富逸趣。

| Description |
Jen Yi (style names Hsiao-lou, Po-nien) was a native of Shan-yin, Chekiang. His father, Jen Ho-sheng, often painted portraits and often instructed Jen when he was young. Later, Jen followed the styles of Jen Hsiung (1823-1857) and Jen Hsun (1835-1893) and developed a style utilizing the methods of Ch’en Hung-shou (1599-1652), Hua Yen (1682-1756) and the two Jens. His figure paintings and bird and flower paintings were excellent, and stylistically, his use of color was fresh and beautiful and his forms were lively. He sold paintings for a long period of time in Shanghai and was regarded by contemporaries as leader of the Shanghai School.
In this scene of rural daily life, an old man leads a small child to a butcher and waits to purchase meat. A stout figure stands to the side as if in conversation with the butcher. On a table are a head of pork and a large section of meat. The child’s eyes are drawn to the meat with curiosity. This freely outlined painting of village figures has a strong light red tone and a rich and unrestrained flavor.
