陳洪綬（1599-1652），浙江諸暨人。字章侯，號老蓮，又稱悔遲。擅長人物及花鳥山水，喜用誇張手法，表現古拙變形的造型趣味。
本幅選自〈雜畫冊〉，枝椏上梅花繁生，著枝疏密得當，正反背側相映。花瓣用墨圈畫，線條遒勁圓潤，以淡青襯底，烘托出雪梅高潔。描繪虯曲梅幹，直中有曲，採濃、枯墨筆鉤勒，線條古拙方硬，具金石韻味。又以墨赭點苔，再以短皴筆觸補其粗糙質感。「梅」「眉」同音，有「喜上眉梢」吉祥語，且梅開早，先報春意，故為「喜報先春」。(20110102)

Chen Hongshou, a native of Zhuji in Zhejiang, had the style name Zhanghou, sobriquet Laolian, and name Huichi. He specialized in figures as well as landscapes and bird-and-flower subjects, often using exaggerated techniques to express an interest in archaic and distorted shapes.
This leaf, from "Album of Miscellaneous Paintings," depicts a branch with many plum blossoms evenly spread among the twigs in a variety of gestures. The petals are rendered as circles in ink, their lines vigorous yet mellow. Set off against a light blue background, it creates the effect of lofty purity with the plum blossoms in snow. Suggested in the convoluted branch of the old plum tree is a sense of twist to the straightforward depiction. Dark and dry ink strokes outline the forms, imbuing the lines with archaic simplicity and angularity, much like Bronze and Stone school calligraphy. Ink and ochre dots suggest moss dots, and short texture strokes have been added to highlight the roughness. The word for "plum" in Chinese is a homonym for "eyebrow," as in the auspicious expression, "To look happy." The plum tree also blossoms early in the year, making it a harbinger of spring, hence the expression "Good tidings for an early spring." (20110102)

陳洪綬（1599-1652）、浙江諸暨の人。字は章侯、號は老蓮、悔遲とも稱した。人物と花鳥、山水畫を得意とし、誇張した表現を好んで、古拙な趣を湛えつつも、対象をデフォルメして表現した。
本作は『雜畫冊』に収錄されている。梅の花がびっしりとついた細い枝は疎密のバランスがよく、枝の?表が対照の妙をなしている。花は墨で丸く描かれ、丸みのある柔らかな線には力強さもあり、淡い青色によって雪中梅の高潔さが際立っている。折れ曲がった梅の枝を見ると、真っ直ぐな中にも曲線があり、濃い墨色と枯墨（かすれた墨による表現）によって描かれており、角ばった硬さのある線には古拙な趣が漂い、情趣に滿ちている。また、墨と赭（赤茶色）を用いた点苔（墨点による表現）に短い皴筆（凹凸や陰影、紋様を表す畫法）を加えて、枝のごつごつとした質感を表現している。「梅」と「眉」は同音で、吉祥を表す「喜上眉梢」（眉のあたりに喜びが表れている）を意味し、早咲きの梅は春の訪れを告げるもので、「喜報先春」（早春の喜ばしい知らせ）を表している。 (20110102)
