| Description |
The original of this work was lost sometime in the past, but a fine tracing copy with outlines filled in ink had been made and is now in a foreign collection. On that copy is a colophon by the Ming dynasty artist-collector Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (1555-1636) as well as the impression of a Northern Sung (960-1127) inner court collection seal. The National Palace Museum version here is a copy made after this traced version. Some of the colophons and seal impressions on this handscroll have been omitted, while the title inscription and Hsuan-ho era seals of the Northern Sung have been moved into the same line. This situation is similar to that of the "Hsing-jang" modelbook in the "Calligraphic Modelbooks of the Three Rarities Hall" assembled in the Ch'ing dynasty. Comparison of the three works indicates that the "Three Rarities Hall" version was also based on the tracing copy now in a foreign collection. Moreover, since both works have the imperial seal of the Ch'ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795) of the Ch'ing court (the foundation of the National Palace Museum collection), some relationship may exist between these three pieces of calligraphy.
