鄒一桂（西元一六八六－一七七二年），江蘇無錫人。字原褒，號小山，又號讓卿，晚號二知老人。為世宗雍正五年（一七二七）進士，歷官至禮部侍郎，加尚書銜。除善繪外，亦精通畫理，著有小山畫譜。本幅選自「墨妙珠林冊」。畫紫色牡丹一朵，名為：「慶天香」。據對幅乾隆題云，此花為複瓣，且花瓣層層堆起，有如起樓台一般，高約五、六寸。其味春而清，初開為單葉，至五或七年後則成千葉，年遠者樹高甚達八、九尺。

| Description |
The name of this violet peony is Heavenly Scent. According to the colophon by the Ch’ien-lung Emperor, the many petals of this flower are stacked and layered like a storied building, such that it is built up to a height of five or six inches tall. The actual flower is very fragrant and the stem can grow to a height of nearly three meters. It’s first bloom is unipetalous, but after six or seven years it can have up to hundreds of petals per flower.
Tsou I-kuei was from Wu-hsi in Kiangsu. He received his Advanced Degree in 1727 and served as Vice-minister and Minister in the Ministry of Rites. Good at the theory as well as the practice of painting, he authored the book Hsiao-shan hua-p’u (Tsou I-kuei on Painting), Hsiao-shan being his style name.
