濃蔭下覆茅堂,賓主對坐,一童持巾侍立,另一童捧淨瓶自檻邊來。題云:「永夏茅堂風日嘉,涼陰寂歷樹交加。客來解帶圍新竹,燕起衝簾落晚花。領略清言蒼玉麈,破除沉困紫團茶。六街車馬塵如海,不到柴桑處士家」。款云:「夏日閒居,寫此紀興,並賦短篇」。玩其詩意,似是自寫其家居生活,畫甚精。

Thatched Cottage and Old Trees
A thatched cottage sits in the dark shade of a tree; host and guest sit facing each other within. A servant-boy holding a towel stands in attendance while a second servant approaches along the railing carrying a jar of water. The inscription says, “He enjoys the breeze every day of the long summer at the thatched cottage; alone in the cool shade he increases communication with the trees. A guest arrives and loosens his belt, surrounded by new bamboo, and the evening flowers gently fall against the screens. Their pure words and jade-like phrases are fully understood, as they disperse the difficulties of the world with the purple tuan tea. The dust of horses and carriages on the Six Highways is like a sea; they do not lead to the rustic mulberry site of the scholar’s home.” It is signed, “At home at leisure on a summer’s day, I painted this to record my joy and wrote out the short poem.” The playful, casual tone of the poem suggests that Wen Cheng-ming was writing about his life at home. The painting is an excellent work from Wen’s 70th year.

文徵明(西元一四七○-一五五九年),初名壁,字徵明,後以字行,更字徵仲,號停雲生、衡山居士,江蘇長州人。詩文書畫並佳,畫師沈周,為明四家之一。因享高壽,故傳世畫蹟頗多。
敞軒中,賓主對坐,一童持巾侍立,另一童捧淨瓶自檻邊來。茅堂前後,竹樹松柳環翠,濃陰茂密。依其款題,似寫夏日家居生活,畫甚精謹。
本幅選自元明人畫山水集錦冊。

Old Tree and Thatched Hut
Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559)

Wen Cheng-ming (style name Cheng-chung, sobriquets T’ing-yun-sheng and Heng-shan-chu-shih) was a native of Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. He excelled at belles-lettres, poetry, painting, and calligraphy. A student of Shen Chou (1427-1509), Wen became Known as one of the Four Ming Masters. As he lived into a ripe old age, the number of works he left behind increased.
In this painting, a host and guest are seated opposite each other in a pavilion as a servant boy stands nearby holding a cap. Another servant boy is seen taking a purification vase from the side of balustrade. All around the thatched hut are verdant pines and bamboo forming thick, dense shade. According to the inscription, this painting seems to describe, in exquisite detail, living at home on a summer day.
