沈周（西元一四二七年至一五０九年），江蘇長洲人。字啟南，號石田，又號白石翁。為人寬厚有大度，能詩文，工書法，又善山水。並兼工墨畫花果、翎毛等。
本冊為沈周六十八歲時所作，作動植物寫生，用意甚精而筆墨不羈，款書筆意亦甚嶄截。據高士奇題，此冊原為嘉興李肇亨所藏，曾載於六研齋筆記，輾轉歸之於高。十六幅中玉蘭、蝴蝶花、萱、葡萄、蠣房、蛑蝤、貓、驢俱精甚。

Shen Chou (1427-1509)
Ming Dynasty
Shen Chou was a native of Suchou, Kiangsu. By nature a magnaminous and broad-minded man, Shen Chou was adept in all the arts: prose-writing, poetry, calligraphy and painting. He worked in all genres of painting.
This album of sketches of plants and animals was painted when Shen Chou was sixty-seven years old. The conceptions are perceptive and the brushwork uninhibited. Shhen Chou’s calligraphy in the album is particularly distinctive. According to the inscription of Kao Shih-ch’i, a later owner, this album was originally in the collection of Li Chao-heng and it is recorded in Liu-yen-chai pi-chi. Of the sixteen leaves, the portrayals of the lotus and frog, crab and shrimp, oysters and clams, crab, and donkeys are all superb.
