內容簡介(英文) Relaxing in a Waterside Pavilion Chou Ch’en (fl. 1450-1535) Ming Dynasty Chou ch’en was a native of Wu-hsien in kiangsu. His style-name was Shun-ch’ing and his sobriquet was Tung-ts’un. In painting landscapes Chou Ch’en took Ch’en Hsien (1405-1496) as his teacher and based his style on the work of the Sung dynasty masters, copying the works of Li T’ang, Liu sung-nien, Ma Yuan, and Hsia Kuei. His brushwork is experienced and close-knit, His style is aggressively bold; later he transmitted his methods to T’ang Yin and Ch’iu Ying. This painting is of a river bank, with willows, and a pavilion and boat are shown. A figure reclines on a couch in the pavilion, whilst the figure in the boat plays on a flute and dangles his legs in the water. A boy carries a ch’in (lute). The trees are pliant and the brcnches gently sway; the ripples on the water seem to move. In all, the painting produces a feeling of coolness and relaxation in the viewer.

Chou Ch’en has captured the delightful feeling of the coolness of the water and a leisurely attitude in summer. His brushwork is tightly organized and strong, resembling that of Ma Yuan and Hsia Kuei of the Southern Sung dynasty.
內容簡介(英文) Zhou Chen, a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu, excelled at landscapes and figures. In landscapes he followed Chen Xian with the style of Song artists, achieving mostly those of Liu Songnian, Li Tang, Ma Yuan, and Xia Gui. His brushwork was skilled and deliberate, his vigorous style powerful yet elegant. His methods were transmitted to Tang Yin and Qiu Ying. This work depicts a riverbank with willows as well as a pavilion and boat. A seated scholar reclines in a thatched hall as a person sits in a skiff in the lower right by the shore playing a bamboo flute. A boy carries a wrapped lute as pliant tree branches sway and ripples of water seem to move. It depicts a leisurely waterside summer scene of coolness and relaxation, which the viewer also seems to feel.(20110408)
