Ting Yun-p'eng excelled at painting Buddhist and Taoist figures and landscapes. Mount Lu in Kiangsi is noted for its unusual hills and peaks. The area abounds with waterfalls and is the frequent subject of praise by poets and painters alike. In the depths of the mist-covered mountain, a waterfall plunges down like a bolt of silk as cranes call from their perch beneath a pine overlooking a forest stream. The scene reminds us the famous line from Li Po singing the praise of Mount Lu, in which he compares the beauty of the waterfall to the Milky Way. The coiling, animated mountain forms do not correspond to the actual landscape, but reflect the mysterious atmosphere of Mount Lu. This work was done in 1599.

Ting Yun-p'eng (style name Nan-yu; and sobriquet Shen-hua chu-shih) was a native of Hsiu-ning, Anhwei. One of the greatest artists of the late Ming, he excelled at painting Taoist and Buddhist subjects and landscapes. His outline method in monochrome ink closely resembles Li Kung-lin's (1049-ca. 1105). In the depths of mist-covered mountains, a waterfall plunges downward like a bolt of silk; cranes call from their perch beneath a pine that overlooks a forest stream. Two gentlemen sit talking, while their servants prepare tea. Another man is strolling leisurely, followed by two servants carrying fungi of immortality and a covered zither. In terms of brushwork, the mountains are modeled in fine "ox-hair" texture strokes. The artist's heavy, turbid handing of ink here is most likely styled on that of Wang Meng (ca. 1301-1385).

A cascade appearing like a bolt of silk is highlighted against layers of ridges and clusters of trees. The composition is mostly full and the mountains done in "ox-hair" texture strokes, the brush method archaic and mature in a manner similar to that of Wang Meng. In terms of arrangement, the painting is also similar in places to "Lofty Mount Lu" by Shen Zhou, with even the title in three seal script characters virtually identical to Shen's. Here, however, the mountaintops are contorted into cloud-head shapes with considerable force and dynamism. The ink tones of the fore-, middle-, and background are also heavy without much differentiation in terms of darkness, thus fully revealing Ding Yunpeng's own style.
This work was painted in 1599, when Ding Yunpeng was 43 years old by Chinese reckoning.
