畫中呈現江南水鄉,溪流貫穿,平疇風和,農夫於田中插秧,漁夫撒網捕魚,有人卸擔叫賣,行舟穿橋而過,熙遊往來,一派江南四月景色。此畫顯現唐寅早歲以細筆作畫,工夫周到,樹叢屋宇,人物舟橋,乃至遠山在望,唐寅畫來,妥貼安穩,這正是專業畫家的本事。畫景自下而上,右左相互錯接,畫中景現於眼前,其意境令人回歸田園,在山村水郭,如聞牧歌,江南佳勝,不必樓臺煙雨,翠綠千頃,自然是詩境,更是文人畫家用意所在,後代評唐寅是融合南北宗畫風,本幅即是一例。
本幅雖無年款,就畫風論,訂為唐寅三十五歲所作(1504)。(註1)(王耀庭)

唐寅(西元一四七○-一五二三年),江蘇吳縣人。字子畏、伯虎,號六如。賦性疏朗,狂逸不羈。詩、書、文章、繪圖無一不臻其妙。畫師周臣,而遠過之,為明四大家之一。 顧文彬所見唐寅十七歲畫貞壽堂圖卷,謂山石樹枝如篆籀,人物衣褶如鐵絲,知唐寅起手作畫,便擅細筆。此圖畫江南水鄉,溪田交錯,農人耕作,漁豢熙遊往來,逼似四月江村景色。此幅無年款,以畫風論,約為三十五歲作品。

Farming in Kiangnan T’ang Yin (1470-1523) Ming Dynasty T’ang Yin was a native of Wu County in Kiangsu. His style names were Tzu-wei and po-hu; his sobriquet was Liu-ju. He was endowed with great genius, but was by nature unconcentional and lived the life of an unrestrained bonvivant. He excelled in whatever he did: poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting. He was a student of Chou Ch’en (ca. 1450-1535), but soon surpassed his teacher. He is considered on of the Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty. Farming in Kiangnan represents the watery scenery of Kiangnan, with its alternating fields and streams. The farmers are variously engaged in plowing, fishing, and leisure activities; the impression is that of a Kiangnan village in the spring planting season. Judging from the style of the painting, it could have been done around 1504 when T’ang Yin was thirty-four years old.
