Emperor Ningzong (Zhao Kuo, 1168-1224) was the second son of Emperor Guangzong, and his mother was the Ciyi Empress, née Li. It is said that his mother once dreamt of the sun setting in the courtyard and receiving it in her hands. She is said afterwards to have become pregnant, giving birth to the future Emperor Ningzong (r. 1195-1224).
In this seated portrait of Ningzong, he is shown somewhat thin, his long nose looking something like a hawk’s beak. The face of the Daoist immortal on an imperial dragon ascending to the heavens in Ma Yuan’s “Riding a Dragon” is also quite similar to that of the Emperor Ningzong here. In fact, a long nose in traditional Chinese physiognomy (judging character from facial features) is said to be an “old dragon face.” The birth of emperors-to-be in the Song dynasty was often accompanied by reports of the appearance of auspicious omens. The Song emperors were followers of Daoism, so court painters at the time naturally used the imperial appearance of the emperor when doing this and certain types of figure painting.(20101015)
