徐熙(約西元十世紀初),江西鍾陵人,出身於江南名族,世代在南唐作官。精於寫生花卉、林木、禽魚、草蟲等。當時畫家作畫以色暈染而成,熙則先以墨染畫,然後再上顏色,人稱之為「落墨法」,特別具有骨氣風神之感。郊野裡長著各色及樣的花草、蝴蝶、螳螂、蜜蜂、天牛,雜錯飛翔,顯示郊野中的天然之趣。畫法與徐熙並無關連,幅後有「金陵徐熙」款,應是畫者自行加署。

內容簡介(英文) |
Hsu Hsi came from Chung-ling in Kiangsi province. He was a member of a noble family that held office under the Southern T'ang dynasty. He liked to paint from life and was an exceptionally able colorist. He delighted in capturing the exact likness of flowers, bamboo, animals, vegetables and insects. In Record of Experiences in Painting, he is associated with the contemporary painter Huang Ch’uan. Later critics designated these two painters as the originators of the "outlined method" and the "boneless(wash) method" of bird-and-flower painting, respectively. A great variety of flowers and plants grow in the countryside. Four butterflies, a dragonfly, a mantis, a bee, and a beetle move about here and there. The scroll unfolds the abundance and charm of nature. Though the scroll bears the signature of Hsu Hsi, the painting does not match his reported style. We may presume that the painter of this scroll added the signature of HsuHsi。
