The Three Friends of Winter
Cheng Man-ch’ing (1902-1975)
Cheng Man-ch’ing, a native of Chekiang, served as a professor in the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. He excelled at painting, calligraphy, and poetry and belles-lettres. He also was studied in medicine and martial arts. His paintings are mostly of flowers done with mature and free brushwork. He also did landscapes with cursive and lively brushwork.
This painting shows the subject of pine, bamboo, and plum blossom, which is known together as “The Three Friends of Winter”. By withstanding the adversity of winter, they symbolize the scholarly spirit of integrity, virtue, and purity. This painting was completed in 1969 during Cheng’s visit to New York.
This work was donated by Mr. Ting Wei-chuang.
